Why are lanes closed on I-16 and I-75? Here's what we know about the construction megaproject

According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, the first possible closure starts Monday night.

MACON, Ga. — If you commute on I-16 and I-75, you will see some lane changes soon.

Gina Snider with the Georgia Department of Transportation says phases two, three, four, and five are happening simultaneously.

"We are about 90% done, which is amazing," she said. "We still have to build some barrier walls and things like that. And then it includes the installation of the Riverside bridge lighting, the installation of Wall Street lighting, a lot of the lighting, and the construction of concrete sound visual walls on I-75 North and southbound."

Phases two and three are the mile of road on I-75 North at Hardeman Avenue and that I-75 northbound split to I-16 eastbound. Snider says phases four and five are about 70% complete.

"We are constructing a lot of bridge sub-substructures for I-16, the Spring Street entrance bridge over there, and exit ramps. And then the Second Street bridge we're still working on that substructure," Snider said

The first lane closure is the I-16 eastbound entrance ramp from I-75 North. The right lane will be closed starting at 10 p.m. Snider says the only way it won't happen is if the wall barrier is poured in time, but there's a 80% chance the lane will be closed.

"If we, inspect it and it's not to our standards, the contractors will have to resubmit their permit again," Snider said.

The second closure is the left lane on I-16 west before Martin Luther King Boulevard and Spring Street will be moved to the right. Snider says that starts Nov. 1 at 10 p.m.

Snider says everything is on track to be done by their completion date.
