Monroe County parent reacts after elementary school crossing guard gets hit on duty

The sheriff's office says the crossing guard was directing traffic on Thornton Road when a truck hit her

MONROE COUNTY, Ga. — Patricia Davis has been helping students get to schools for nearly three years.

On Wednesday morning, it didn't exactly go as planned.

Around 7:30 a.m., Davis - a crossing guard at T.G. Scott Elementary School - was hit by a truck while directing traffic on Thornton Road.

Sheriff Brad Freeman the driver told law enforcement that the sun was directly in his eyes when he was driving down Thomaston Road and he couldn't see the crossing guard until his truck hit her.

"He was going extremely slow when he hit her," Freeman said. "She was very fortunate because her injuries were very superficial."

Lindsey Barns is a parent to two kids at T.G. Scott Elementary School. She says Davis has helped both her kids cross the street for several years.

"She is always waving to everybody and smiling and like you can tell she takes pride in her job and protects the kids," Barns said.

She says watching Davis get injured was difficult to watch.

"It was very hard to see," Barns said. "It made me really sad."

Sheriff Freeman says they don't expect to charge the driver since it was an accident. The school is hoping Davis will be able to return to duty sometime next week.

Patricia Davis is out of the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
