MONROE COUNTY, Ga. — Monroe County has activated three emergency shelters in preparation for Hurricane Helene, according to a release from Monroe County Emergency Services.
“Monroe County has many citizens who live on or near waterways with many of those having children or elderly family members,” the release said. “As such, three shelters are being activated.”
They say there will be shelters open at 42 Towaliga River Drive in Jackson, at the Monroe County Recreation Department at 100 Dan Pitts Drive in Forsyth and at the New Providence Baptist Church on 260 Highway 41 S in Forsyth.
The release says the Jackson location is the only shelter that will be accepting pets, and they must be in a crate or kennel. The other locations will allow no pets of any kind.
The shelters will open at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, and will remain open until 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27. They say they may re-evaluate the opening times for the shelter based on changes in weather patterns.
Those hoping to stay in the emergency shelter are encouraged to bring their own snacks and non-perishable foods.
