'Mammomarathon' in Milledgeville brings together people for fight against breast cancer

Former WNBA player and Milledgeville native Tasha Butts lost her fight with breast cancer in 2023. Nearly a year later, people are fighting breast cancer in her name

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — Atrium Health Navicent Baldwin teamed up with the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and the Georgia Alliance for Breast Cancer to host an event targeted at defeating breast cancer.

The trio held a "mammogram marathon" on Saturday at the Breast Imaging Center in Milledgeville. They screened over 50 woman at the event all for free.

The "Mammomarathon" was part of a two day event honoring and celebrating the legacy of former WNBA player and Milledgeville native Tasha Butts. Butts, who played for the Minnesota Lynx, was an assistant coach for Georgia Tech and LSU before accepting a job as Georgetown's head coach. She passed away from a two-year battle with breast cancer on Oct. 23, 2023.

Nearly a year later, the community she grew up in celebrated her and continued the fight against breast cancer through the free screenings and Baldwin's first ever mammogram testing.

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund and the Georgia Alliance for Breast Cancer gave Atrium Health Navicent with two grants totaling $60,000  to start up a mobile mammography program to help increase the amount of screenings held.

The marathon lasted from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
