3 takeaways from No. 5 Georgia's upset over No. 1 Texas

The Bulldogs overcame the offense's flaws thanks to a dominant defense to win a key SEC road matchup.

AUSTIN, Texas — It's not something you hear too often. Georgia pulled off an upset.

The No. 5 Bulldogs defeated No. 1 Texas in a game that got tighter as it wore on.

Here's three takeaways on how Georgia got it done.

A rough and rocky offense

It wasn't pretty for the Bulldogs offense.

Carson Beck threw three interceptions and threw for just under 200 yards with no touchdown passes. The fifth-year senior made several risky decisions and many didn't pay off. However, even when Beck did make good passes, his receivers tended to drop the football.

Trevor Etienne's performance on the ground was key for the Bulldogs. Three rushing touchdowns helped the offense capitalize on multiple touchdowns and nearly ran for 100 yards on the ground. However, Georgia fans would likely have had a better overall performance.

Ultimately, the Bulldogs still claimed victory over an undefeated opponent and the No. 1 team in the country.

The smothered and covered defense returns

Sure, it may not be the technical name the defense has used in the past, but it nearly perfectly described the Bulldogs' defense in this matchup.

Just like many people's opinions on the Waffle House hashbrowns, Georgia's defense was fantastic in this game. The Bulldogs forced four turnovers, including three fumbles and an interception. The pressure Georgia put on Texas quarterbacks Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning prevented either from getting into a proper rhythm.

Jalon Walker had seven tackles, three sacks and a fumble recovery after the first half. Cornerback Daylen Everette, who had a really strong day in coverage, had an interception and a sack where he forced a fumble in the same half.

Fellow third-year Mykel Williams also had a dominant performance as a pass rusher. He had two sacks himself including his own strip sack on Ewers.

The only negative was the several dropped interceptions the Bulldogs couldn't nab.

Overall, the Bulldog's defense, which had shown weaknesses all season, was a key reason for the Bulldogs' win.

Where to go from here

The game Georgia fans had circled on their schedule has come and gone and has resulted in a massive win.

The Bulldogs played great football and showcased itself as a possible national championship contender. They did all this on the road, which is an even bigger feat.

However, Georgia's season isn't over. There's still matchups against a tough Ole Miss team and a Tennessee team who just beat Alabama, which is the only team that has defeated Georgia this season.
