Milledgeville Police Department finds body of man seen struggling in the water at Oconee Greenway

The Greenway is closed while emergency personnel continue to search.

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — Update:

The Milledgeville Police Department recovered the body of a missing swimmer, according to a Facebook post from the department

They say the body was recovered at around 1:30 p.m. Friday afternoon. They say his family was notified, and Mjr. Linc Boyer identified the victim as 26-year-old Hunter Knight of Thomaston.

The search started Thursday night after dispatch was notified of two men struggling in the water. They say one of the men had gotten out of the water safely, but the other man was nowhere to be found. 

The Oconee River Greenway has now been reopened, the police department says, but crews are still working to clear the scene.

The Milledgeville Police Department is searching for a man on the Oconee Greenway after he was unable to get out of the water, according to a Facebook post from the department.

They say officers were dispatched to the area around 7 p.m. on Thursday in reference to two men who were struggling in the water. They say one man got out safely but emergency crews are still searching for the other man. 

Witnesses told police the other man was unable to get out of the water.

The Greenway was closed while emergency personnel continue to search. 

Around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, crews suspended their search and planned to continue in the morning. The Greenway will continue to be closed as crews search.

This is the latest update the department has as of Friday morning.

Major Linc Boyer said the department would update when more information was available.
