Milledgeville man arrested for manslaughter, DUI after 5-car pileup in Maryland, per report

Police say the crash happened on Oct. 4. The man was sent to a Maryland detention center and held without bond.

MACON, Ga. — A Milledgeville man was arrested and charged with a DUI for his role in a deadly five-car crash in Maryland, according to a report from the Maryland State Police.

They say Ray Pittman, 62, has been charged with two counts of driving while impaired, two counts of vehicular manslaughter, and two counts of homicide by motor vehicle after a five-car collision happened in Maryland on Oct. 4, 2024.

The release says officers responded to a five-vehicle crash involving a tractor trailer around 5 p.m. on Oct. 4. A 27-year-old - Morgan Suter, the sole occupant of her vehicle - was pronounced dead at the scene on Interstate 70.

They said early investigations suggested that Pittman's tractor trailer failed to slow down for heavy traffic, and slammed into the back of Suter's Ford. The impact from that collision drove their vehicles into the back of three other cars.

The drivers of two other vehicles were taken by ambulance to receive treatment for their injuries. There has been no further information about their condition after the crash.

I-70 was closed for around five hours for the crash investigation, per the release. Pittman was taken to the Washington County Detention Center in Maryland and held without bond.
