Middle Georgia State breaks ground on new $3 million enrollment center

The enrollment center is expected to open next summer, and a new residential hall on the Macon campus is opening this year.

MACON, Ga. — Middle Georgia State University's Macon campus is about to get a major upgrade in the form of a new enrollment center.

The Peyton Anderson Enrollment Center is the college's third major project over the last year.

"I was a student here from 1997 to 2001. I was one of the first graduates in the communications and information technology program," Middle Georgia State Communications Director Lee Greenway said.

Now working as a Middle Georgia State employee, Greenway says the Macon campus has come a long way from his college days.

"When I was student here, this was a commuter campus. We didn't have any on-campus housing," Leeway said.

resident Christopher Blake says the changes are coming fast.

"We have had a whole transformation. The campus appearance, the campus strategy is evolving very rapidly," Blake said.

Blake made expanding the campus with updated buildings a high priority since he took the position in 2014.

"We've been able to create a new roadway system with Macon-Bibb, and we've also been able to obtain from the Board of Regents, because of our growing numbers, build a residential facility that will open this coming summer," he said.

They're adding another big project to the mix, a $3 million, 8,000 square-foot enrollment center.

"The Peyton Anderson Enrollment is going to be like a concierge operation in a hotel. We're going to be able to help students with admissions, with financial aid, with finding out about residential opportunities, about internships and graduation," Blake said.

The Peyton Anderson Foundation paid for half of the project. Blake says once it's finished, you won't be able to miss it.

"It's going to be built in a way that is visible 24 hours a day, illuminated at night, but visible to 475 and to the Eisenhower Parkway," Blake said.

Greenway says even the community is starting to take notice of the big things coming to the campus.

"People are already starting to comment on some changes. I've hear from people in the community that, 'Hey! Things are looking really different out there,' and that's a great thing," Greenway said.

Students will be able to move into the new residential hall this summer.
The enrollment center will take 18 months to complete and is expected to open next summer.
