'You came to play!': Macon professor competes on Jeopardy!

Dr. Laura Thomason, an English professor at Middle Georgia State University, competed on Jeopardy! Wednesday night.

MACON, Ga. — A Macon professor made Central Georgia proud in her appearance on a popular CBS game show.

Dr. Laura Thomason, an English professor at Middle Georgia State University, competed on Jeopardy! Wednesday night.

She played a good game, with a particularly strong showing in "Famous & Historic Women," which prompted host Alex Trebek to proclaim, "You came to play!"

Thomason ended the show in third place, finishing with winnings of $2,200.

The professor says it took about 10 years to actually get on the show. She says you must take an online test first, and based on your performance, you will be selected for an audition to get a chance to be on the show.

Her appearance as a contestant was filmed in November. Thomason was called in mid-October, and she says the experience is one she'll never forget.

"It was so great. I just think everyone should do it, because even the test is fun, the audition is fun, and being on the show is the biggest fun, so if you've ever thought about -- or even if you haven't -- you should take advantage," Thomason said.

Congratulations, Dr. Thomason!
