MACON, Ga. — With less than one week away from election day, the final push to get out the vote is making its way to Georgia.
Those efforts have trickled down to college campuses, rallying young voters who are casting ballots in their first presidential election.
At Mercer University, students representing the non-partisan organization "Mercer Votes" are making sure their voices are heard.
The group is made up of "Democracy fellows," a prestigious title held by Mercer Bears Harris Wallace, Sophia Hall, and Brandon Biel.
Despite being young voters themselves, they are working to educate students and other first-time voters about what to expect this election season.
Wallace is a second-year student from Gwinnett County and already cast his vote for his first presidential election.
"Even if you don't always get everything right, it's about having a passion for it and eagerness to carry on a lot of work that's been going on for decades," Wallace said. "We all kind of know, the election is bigger than any one organization or any one college, so we're going to do our part."
Assistant Director of Service and Civic Engagement Margaret Rooyakkers says it's Mercer's fourth year recruiting democracy fellows.
"We pride ourselves in non-partisan voter education, engagement, and registration," Rooyakkers said. "We want to make sure students know and are informed to be civic leaders in their communities, both during and after their time here at Mercer."
The team has spent the last four months hosting campus events and collaborating with other student organizations to make sure their peers have the resources they need to successfully cast their ballots.
Hall and Biel are juniors and cast their ballots, too.
"The foundation that we set now in being involved in our civic duty of voting, democracy and our government is going to influence the generations that come after us," Hall said.
The Coalition held its own mock election, where 429 students participated, making up 13% of undergrads.
"Some students may not have made up their minds, yet others may have, but they're happy to talk about it," Biel said. "They will come up to me and want to talk about voting and making a plan with the entire election coming up. So, that's been really great."
Mercer Votes shared the results from their student mock election, with Kamala Harris receiving 67% of the votes over Donald Trump's 30%.
They are set to host a watch party for students on campus on election night.
