CRISP COUNTY, Ga. — A man was shot in Crisp County Wednesday after attempting to steal a car, according to the Crisp County Sheriff's Office.
They say it happened on Highway 280 West near milepost 5 by Crossroad Store Road. The law enforcement activity caused the highway to temporarily shut down, but it has since reopened.
Sheriff Billy Hancock said that the man stopped at a worksite near that location and tried to take a vehicle from there.
He added that the man attacked the workers and threatened to kill them unless they gave up the vehicle.
One of the workers, according to Hancock, shot the man in the stomach. Multiple first responders — including a helicopter — were involved in the response.
The man was taken to a local hospital. His current condition, alongside his name, is unclear.
First responders closed 290 West for more than an hour, however it's been reopened since.
In a post, the Crisp County Sheriff's Office says there is no threat to the public.
This is a developing story. We will provide updates as soon as they become available.
