'We have jobs now' | Macon community says goodbye to Sister Theresa Sullivan, director from Daybreak

MACON, Ga. — Sister Theresa Sullivan is parting ways with Macon's Daybreak Resource Center.

She served Macon's homeless community as Daybreak's director for eight years. She also helped spearhead the opening of a respite center last month.

Daybreak held a special goodbye party for sister Sullivan.

“Very positive and welcoming," Michael Peek said. "She's a very welcoming woman and she's very motivating with anything she does."

Peek joined dozens in filling the room at Daybreak to honor sister Sullivan, who poured her heart and soul into helping people in need.

“We were in hell just three months prior,” Peek said.

He says Sullivan helped him, and his wife, get back on the right path.

“She's helped us with homelessness we have jobs now, we have food on the table, and we have God in our lives,” Peek said.

At Wednesday's event, Sullivan shed some tears when she was given a mini version of the homeless statue that stands outside of Daybreak.

The statue represents one who cares for vulnerable populations of the community. Sullivan said she believes if everyone is treated with love, the community can achieve great things together.

“I am so proud to call myself a Maconite for eight years," Sullivan said. "The Macon community is so special."

Her compassion has made her one of Macon's loudest voices on the issues of housing, health care, and homelessness.

“You know every day, I run into challenges with people who need medical care, who need housing,” Sullivan said.

Urging community-wide involvement is a priority for her.

“Different people from around the community come together to support Daybreak,” Sullivan said.

The resource center welcomed sister Deborah Mallott, too, who will be the center's new director.
