Macon Bibb considering plan to revamp Lake Tobesofkee | Cost, timeline and more details

A $23 million project proposal from Lovejoy Capital could bring repairs, renovations, and revamping to the summer staple.

MACON, Ga. — A hot summer day at Lake Tobesofkee welcomes beachgoers to soak up some sun.

For the Williams family, a day at the beach can make the perfect getaway. Lakeisha Williams said she and her family try to visit once a year for the 46 years she's lived in Macon.

On days that involve wrangling little ones, the playground is essential.

But between swimming and swinging, she's faced with limited options for her clan.

"There's not much here to do for the kids, there's not much here to do for nobody," said Williams.

Beachgoers like the Williams' could soon be indulging in new amenities as part of Macon-Bibb's newest venture to transform Lake Tobesofkee.

The county is looking into a potential partnership with Lovejoy Capital, a private investment company led by members of the Talmadge family. After an executive session in the pre-Commission meeting at City Hall on Tuesday, commissioners agreed to take next steps with the proposal.

If the $23 million contract is approved, the company would take over full lake operations, which includes staffing, maintenance, and adding new elements like amenities at campsites and an interactive maze at the old Sandy Beach Water Park.

Lovejoy would also provide the necessary funding for expenses related to the development plan depending on final land lease term agreements.

Lovejoy plans to recruit another company to build an outdoor adventure area with zip lines, elevated trails, canopies, and inclusive playgrounds for all ages.

But the Williams family is hoping for a new water park.

"They need slides, you know? Something that's attractive when you pull up. It's not really attractive to the kids like they don't look and say 'Ooh,'" said Lakeisha.

With Lovejoy's involvement, Macon-Bibb could save nearly $4.8 million if they take over lake operations.

Bibb leaders will decide in about three months whether they will accept the proposal with Lovejoy.
