Bibb Commissioners to discuss roadwork updates, new technology

New road scanning technology provided by Shi International could analyze roads for repair in Macon.

MACON, Ga. — It can be a bumpy ride to get from place to place in Bibb County.

Justen Scdoris knows. He works at a car dealership and sees the damage from cars across Macon - including his own.

"They're horrible around here, like every six months I need to get an alignment on my truck," said Scdoris.

According to the county scale, a road rated a level 5 is worn away with cracks and potholes, while level one means smooth sailing.

"People complain about it all the time," Scdoris said. "I work in a car dealership so, people always coming up getting alignments talking about the potholes they've hit. They've done this to their rims, so it's pretty bad."

The county's next turn on the path to road resurfacing will cost more than $243,000.

Mayor Lester Miller has proposed recruiting a new company for road scanning technology that works to support the county's efforts to repair unsafe roads.

The technology provided by Shi International would analyze the quality of roads and re-scan Macon-Bibb's priority list to see what still needs fixing.

Miller says Macon-Bibb has fixed roads in stages, with an estimated cost of $400,000 to pave a single road.

"They're very reputable," Miller said.  "It's one that we're recommending based on this good price as well, but they do good quality work, and it's something that we need to do. The last company did a good job when we use those roads, but this is going to be a little bit more specific to our needs, so we're excited about it."

If approved, Miller says they will move forward with a contract with Shi International that would be put into action their next quarter.
