Macon-Bibb Fire Department puts out fire at East Macon apartment complex

The fire is still under investigation, though residents at the scene said they thought it was started by fireworks.

MACON, Ga. — The Macon-Bibb Fire Department put out a fire in East Macon on Thursday night, according to Macon-Bibb Fire Chief Shane Edwards.

Edwards said the fire was at the River Park Apartments, an apartment complex at 720 Tidewater Circle. He says only one person was injured in the fire, and they were taken to the hospital for what he thought was smoke inhalation.

He also said 16 apartments were damaged in the fire, eight of which he said were "completely damaged." Edwards said firefighters managed to put out the fire, but they'd be working for several more hours on the rest of the scene.

"We're going to be on the scene for a few more hours," Edwards said. "Just monitoring the scene and making sure there was no more damage from the fire. But like I said -  other than one person being checked out for smoke inhalation - nobody else was injured and the fire is under control."

The fire is still under investigation, and Edwards said they hadn't determined a cause to the fire yet. Neighbors told our reporter on the scene that they believe the fire was started from fireworks.

Edwards said The Red Cross would be assisting the residents with housing while the apartments are being repaired.
