House of Hines in Macon to hang it up after nearly six decades

The formal wear store recently celebrated another year in business.

MACON, Ga. — House of Hines Formal Wear, a historic bridal and formal wear shop in Macon, will be closing its doors, ending a notable 59-year legacy.

Owners Bettie Causey and Chris Causey announced the closure in a heartfelt Facebook post, reflecting on the memories and friendships formed over nearly six decades.

"As we retire, we reflect on the countless memories, friendships, and moments of joy we have shared with each of you," the post read. "Our journey has been enriched by your patronage, and we leave with hearts full of appreciation."

The store was founded in 1965 by the late Hines Causey Sr., who leveraged his singing career to start the business. Known for his exceptional voice, Hines performed at over 10,000 weddings and funerals.

House of Hines became known locally by many, but in 1977, a devastating fire forced the business to move from downtown to its current location on Vineville Avenue. Despite this setback, the Causey family rebuilt and continued to serve the community.

"We'd been married for 44 years at the time of his death," Bettie said. "Then I've had two years, since then, without him."

Bettie reflected on her late husband’s passing in 2022. The family continued to run the shop, hoping to honor his legacy.

"We have continued to keep it open for a couple of years,” she said. “But this is really about Hines. And we're ready to retire.”

The decision to retire comes with mixed emotions for her.

"I've been working since I was 16 years old and it's time to retire," Bettie said.

While the business will close, Bettie plans to stay on the property a little while longer and is still deciding what to do with it in the future.

Bettie expressed her gratitude to the community and continued her support of her late husband.

"I want people to never forget Hines and his beautiful voice,” she said. “Always remember that we tried our best to serve them to the best of our ability."

Since the announcement, the community has shown overwhelming support, mainly on social media, sharing memories of buying wedding dresses and renting prom attire.

House of Hines will officially close on August 31, and Bettie encourages the community to come out to their closing sale in the final month.
