Bibb deputy exchanges gunfire with man near Mercer University Drive, sheriff's office said

They say deputies responded to the scene for a suspicious person called trying to enter automobiles.

MACON, Ga. — A Bibb County deputy and a suspect exchanged gunfire near Mercer University Drive while deputies responded to a suspicious person call, the Bibb County Sheriff's Office says. However, the sheriff's office is still searching for the armed suspect.

They say a caller reported a person attempting to enter cars near Mercer University Drive, but when deputies attempted to make contact with the man, the suspect opened fire.

In response, the deputy then exchanged gunfire and the suspect fled the area. No one was injured and the sheriff's office says they are still trying to identify the suspect.

It is unclear exactly where and when the shooting happened and the sheriff's office says they'll provide that information come Monday.

This is a developing story. We'll provide more information when it becomes available.
