A child was sleeping in their bed at a Fort Valley apartment. Then, they were shot, police say

They say it happened in the early hours of Friday morning at the Lakeview Apartments.

FORT VALLEY, Ga. — An early morning shooting in Fort Valley left a 9-year-old injured while they were sleeping in their bed, according to an incident report from the Fort Valley Police Department.

They say it happened Friday at around 1:30 a.m. at the Lakeview Apartments, the same apartment complex where a shootout between two men broke out in late June.

According to the release, a woman standing in the breezeway of an apartment was waving people down pleading for help. She said her 9-year-old daughter was shot while laying in their bed.

The child was taken to a local hospital by Peach County EMS but the child had to be airlifted to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

The incident report offered no details about the condition of the child or the hunt for a suspect.

This is a developing story. We'll provide additional updates when they become available.
