Bibb County escapee Chavis Stokes faces new federal charges in connection to his time on the run

Stokes, who was captured in Montezuma, appeared before a federal judge Tuesday on new charges connected to his 11-day period on the run.

MACON, Ga. — One of the Bibb County jail escapees has a new charge under his belt.

According to a federal indictment issued last month, Chavis Stokes is charged with possession of a firearm as a convicted felon in connection to his time on the run.

The indictment suggests that Stokes possessed multiple guns when he was captured on Oct. 26, 2023, only 11 days after he and three others Johnifer Barnwell, Joey Fournier and Marc Anderson  jumped from the second-story dayroom window in a brazen jail escape.

While he was indicted on Feb. 13, he appeared before U.S. Magistrate Charles Weigle on Tuesday for his first appearance in federal court, according to court records.

The indictment accuses Stokes of "knowingly possess a firearm" after being convicted of a felony. They say he had a Glock 19-millimeter semi-automatic pistol and a Romarm Draco 7.62 x 39 mm semiautomatic pistol.

Stokes, who was 29 at the time of his escape, was found only 50 miles away in Macon County at a home in Montezuma. They say he was captured at around 2 p.m.

Stokes was arrested in February 2020 during an east Macon drug bust. The Bibb Special Investigation Unit, SWAT team and U.S. Marshals executed a search warrant at 619 Main St. and 360 Jones Ave.

In the raid, investigators seized cocaine, marijuana, digital scales, packaging materials, and a gun found to be reported stolen in 2018.

Stokes was charged with Possession of Schedule I with intent, Possession of Schedule II with intent, Possession of Marijuana with intent, Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Theft By receiving stolen property, Possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

He also had additional charges listed on the Bibb County Jail's website, including Simple Battery, Hit and Run, Fleeting and Attempting to Elude and various other charges.

After his arrest, he now faces an escape charge for his time on the run.
