Lake Tobesofkee could potentially get a $23 million makeover | Everything you need to know

Mayor Miller addresses concerns surrounding the $23 million project proposal from Lovejoy Capital that could bring repairs and new additions to the lake.

MACON, Ga. — At Lake Tobesofkee, visitors come to swim, camp, and even disc golf.

For the Macon Aces Disc Golf Club, Claystone Park is the place to be on Wednesday nights.

With a new proposal for the lake, Jim Luppino and the rest of the league can all agree on one thing.

"We put a lot of effort into it, and we don't want to lose it," Luppino said. "We also made an agreement with the park when we started that, if they ever needed that land for anything, it's theirs."

Bibb commissioners are considering the $23 million dollar proposal with Lovejoy Capitol.

If approved, the company would take over full lake operations and build new attractions. This would include a new maze at the old Sandy Beach Water Park, glamping updates to campgrounds

With these changes, people have shared concerns like Jim's about Lovejoy potentially privatizing the lake.

"That was my only concern that they were going to raise admission," Luppino said. "Love the idea that they do additional fixes to the park and start maintaining it a little better. The maintenance guys do a good job, but in the summer it's hard to keep up with."

Mayor Miller says to expect the same $3 - $5 entry fee. However, Lovejoy would be allowed to charge a state rate for those visiting from outside Georgia.

"You're basically getting better value for the same or less money," Miller said. "So it's a good deal for the residents of Middle Georgia. It's a great deal for people who are traveling through our area that need a place to stay on the way to their destination, or just to add another stop they may come to year-round."

As for the golfers, Miller says the project would not take away what currently stands at Claystone Park.

"Some of these same folks question the amphitheater, the pickleball courts, even a national park property we bought out there, and things, after a while, come to fruition. So I send a place of trust in us to do the right thing for this community," says Miller.

If Macon-Bibb accepts the proposal in 90 days, Mayor Miller says the lake will still be open to the public during an eight to 12-month building process.
