Macon United football champions honored at city hall

The Macon United Hurricanes recently won their first national championship in Florida.

MACON, Ga. — Macon-Bibb county leaders honored some national champions at city hall Tuesday evening.

The Macon United Hurricanes recently won their first national championship in Florida.

Macon United is a travel team, but it is affiliated with the Macon-Bibb County Recreation Department Youth Football program.

There are three different age groups and all of them have won championships. The program started about 8 years ago.

"We tell them every play, 'Go 100, nothing less,' so I would tell them and every other kid, 'Go 100 every play, not just on the field, but in life itself -- go 100 in every single thing -- school, work, home and wherever you are," said Assistant Coach Mike Burney.

Macon United Football hosts tryouts in late June and starts playing in August.
