Why did construction stop on Pine Hill Drive in Macon? Here's what we know

Neighbors on Pine Hill Drive gets answers after they say construction was left unfinished. Crews were adding sidewalks to the area.

MACON, Ga. — Back in March, Macon Bibb Commissioners approved adding sidewalks to make a prominent Macon road safer.

Last month, neighbors on Pine Hill Drive said it came to a halt, making the road and their driveways bumpy.

Weeks after sidewalk construction stopped, Sandra Jarrett still feels unsafe in her neighborhood. She says even a small trip to her mailbox is still an issue.

“I almost tore my car up trying to get in my driveway," Jarrett said. "So, I was wondering why the construction work had stopped, and when I checked into it, nobody had answers for me anywhere."

It's not just her driveway that was affected.

“Tore up all of our driveways and half of our yards have been blocked with these big crater-like things,” Jarrett said.

Jarrett finally has some answers. Macon-Bibb Commissioner Stanley Stewart says he worked with the county to get an update.

“The individuals found out when the project was going to start," he said. "So, it would have been incumbent upon those individuals to let them know when the project was going to be halted and when it would start back."

He says the construction company stopped work after they noticed issues with the pipes. It's now a utility issue the county is taking up with the Macon Water Authority.

“They assured me that it would start back immediately, the problem was the utility situation. That's a pipeline from MWA Macon water authority that has to be dealt with,” Stewart said.

Neighbors like Jarrett and Roy Miller will watch for any signs of progress.

“I think right now monitoring from day to day to see if we see any change or any attitude towards improving this area,” Miller said.

Jarrett says she thinks construction will be starting back soon.

“I saw the construction company trucks pass by at least 3-4 times today so I'm thinking maybe they're about to get started,” Jarrett said.

Stewart says when construction starts back, crews will focus on the northern part of the area closer to Shurling Drive.
