'It is a safety hazard' | Macon neighbors asking for answers after construction stopped nearly one month ago

In March, Macon Bibb commissioners gave the green light to add sidewalks along Pine Hill Drive with the goal to make the road safer.

MACON, Ga. — In March, Macon-Bibb commissioners gave the green light to add sidewalks along Pine Hill Drive with the goal to make the road safer.

Neighbors stood outside on Pine Hill Drive in disbelief and with no answers. Sandra Jarrett says in June, she was excited to see sidewalks in front of her home.

"I'm like, 'Oh, wow, we're getting our driveways fixed. We're getting the street fixed, we're getting somewhere,'" she said. "But I came home, and the driveway was tearing up."

But now her driveway has been left unfinished for nearly one month.

"I thought I was going into a sinkhole. And this is what I have to experience every time I come home. I got to figure out if I'm coming from that direction, how I'm going to get into the driveway smoothly," Jarrett said.

Jarrett says she sees people speeding through Pine Hill Drive, making it even more unsafe.

Even while making a trip to pick up her mail, she says her safety is not prioritized.

Macon-Bibb commissioner Stanley Stewart says it may be a construction delay, but the project needs to be finished.

"It is a safety hazard, from the standpoint of people backing out the driveways, for people like Jarrett, going across the street to get her mail, for children walking back and forth," Stewart said.

He says his next steps are to try and help the community.

"Try to do my diligence to find out exactly what is going on with this project," Stewart said. "As you can tell, it's a project that needs to be finished."

Jarrett says she hopes she can soon take the walk to her mailbox safely.

"My concern is for the entire neighborhood, you know, getting the safety and protection they need," Jarrett said.

Macon-Bibb city manager Keith Moffett says the engineering company is currently working out utility relocations and connections.
