Central Georgians flock to Macon for Macon-Bibb County Parks and Rec back-to-school bash

The parks and rec department expected over 250 people to attend

MACON, Ga. — School is back in session.

As schools all over Central Georgia kick off their semesters, places like Macon-Bibb County are holding back-to-school events to help kids get ready for the school year.

On Saturday, the Macon-Bibb County Parks and Recreation department held a back-to-school bash for the community.

The lines stretched outside the Elaine H. Lucas Senior Center as people waited to enter the building. Recreation programmer Natalie Allen said she was expecting between 250-500 people to attend the event.

The event offered a wide array of things for students, teachers, parents and other community members to take advantage of.

Specifically, several organizations were there giving out information at various boots spread out in the building.

Those in attendance were:

  • Macon-Bibb County

  • Girls Dig Deep Initiative

  • Invest Young

  • Family Counseling of Central GA

  • Department of Juvenile Justice

  • Zeta Phi Beta

The event also had music and free food for those that came out.

They also gave out book bags and other school supplies in preparation for the start of the semester.

The event was also held to promote their after school program. Allen said registration for the program will begin on Aug. 5 and the program itself will kick off on Aug. 12.

She said the program will provide free tutoring, free mental health services and fitness to students after school at individual recreation departments.

The back-to-school event itself ran from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
