Grow Macon is bringing sustainable food options to areas that experience food insecurity

Food insecurity affects low-income households, people who don't live near grocery stores, or who have limited transportation to stores.

MACON, Ga. — Latravius Smith says she loves all of Macon.

"However, East Macon is near and dear to my heart," says Smith.

That's why she's excited to take steps forward to help sprout changes in an area she believes is underserved through an organization she volunteers for and helps bring grants to Grow Macon.

"In this underserved community, food insecurity is definitely a top concern," says Smith.

Smith says the reason is due to the access to healthy food options. According to health.gov, lack of transportation is one way food insecurity impacts people. Another problem affecting some living in East Macon is the lack of transportation.

"You have elderly people, single-parent homes, homes with no transportation, and you run into issues where there are items that aren't on the shelves," says Smith.

Grow Macon is building plant beds by some East Macon apartments to give people food options close by. They're asking for volunteers to help put soil in the plant beds and plant plants.

"Fellowship of people is what we're recycling over and over. Building relationships and resiliency among us and the food insecurity issue," says Smith.

They need volunteers year-round, but December 21st and December 22nd are when Grow Macon needs volunteers for this upcoming project in East Macon. You can show up to 1108 Eastview Avenue, Macon, Georgia, to sow a seed of prosperity.
