MONROE COUNTY, Ga. — Several Monroe County organizations teamed up to help nearly 40 passengers on a Megabus escape the Central Georgia heat over the weekend.
Mechanical problems caused a Megabus to break down on I-75N on Sunday afternoon. With temperatures in the 90s, the passengers started to overheat.
Monroe County Emergency Management coordinated a rescue and the Monroe County Board of Education sent one of their buses to help move the passengers.
Jody Barfield, the youth pastor at Forsyth United Methodist Church, opened up the church for them to cool off. The original plan was for the passengers to be transported to a nearby truck stop.
Employees at the church say most of the passengers told them they were traveling from Orlando when the bus broke down.
The volunteers made sure the passengers got cold drinks, ice cream, fresh watermelon and snacks until a replacement bus could arrive.
Monroe County Emergency Management took to Facebook on Monday to thank all the organizations that took part in the rescue.
13WMAZ reached out to Megabus for comment. The company has not responded at this time.
