Mercer first-year students arrive to campus for move in day

Nearly 1,000 new students moved in on Friday and Saturday

MACON, Ga. — Nearly 1,000 new students moved into their new homes on Friday and Saturday.

With the assistance of upperclassmen, faculty and staff, incoming freshman, transfers grad students and many more moved into campus residence halls at Mercer University.

The first-year students were welcomed and greeted by the Mercer Movers, which is a group of 100 upperclassmen, faculty and staff who help unload and carry new students’ belongings into their rooms.

Students came from all over Georgia and even from other states like Florida.

The move in ran from around 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday.

This group of first years then attended Bear Beginning orientation, which occurs throughout the weekend. 

Mercer’s Fall Convocation, which kicks off the new year, will be on Monday, Aug. 19, while the first day of classes will be on Tuesday, Aug. 20.

The school is beginning its 192nd academic year. Mercer was founded in 1833 and has about 9,000 students enrolled in 12 various schools and colleges on campuses in Macon and Atlanta.

They also have medical schools in Macon, Savannah and Columbus, alongside regional academic centers in Henry and Douglas counties.

The university is also partnered with several groups, including Atrium Health Navicent and Piedmont Macon Medical Center, as well as the Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins.
