CHAUNCEY, Ga. — A truck driver was fatally injured Wednesday afternoon after a train derailed in Chauncey.
According to Dodge County Sheriff Lynn Sheffield, the train hit an empty log truck and the driver was injured.
Coroner Smith says 23-year-old Morgan Sheffield was airlifted to the Medical Center, Navicent Health where he was pronounced dead just before 4 p.m.
Two people on the train were injured in the accident, according to Dodge County Fire Chief James Atkins
Sheffield said Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident, but he didn’t think they were still at the scene.
He did say traffic was moving as normal through the intersection and the derailment wasn’t causing road closures.

Norfolk Southern spokeswoman Rachel McDonnell says it happened just after 2:30 p.m. at a crossing off Highway 341 -- the McRae Highway.
She says the log truck had stopped on the track and the train engineer sounded the horn, but couldn't stop in time. The train partially derailed after the crash.
She also says this was a “local” train returning to Macon from Brunswick. She said she didn’t know what was (or had been) on the train.
