'He didn't deserve to get killed like that' | Dublin neighborhood mourns man killed in shooting

Police say Cortez Hicks died at Fairview Park Hospital at around 12:24 p.m. Wednesday following a shooting at the 400 block of Jones Village.

DUBLIN, Ga. — A Dublin man died in a shooting Wednesday afternoon.

According to a release, Dublin Police responded to a call just before noon Wednesday on the 400 block of Jones Village Lane in Laurens County.

They say Cortez Hicks, 35, died at Fairview Park Hospital at around 12:24 p.m. Wednesday.

The release says the shooting happened at Hicks' home in Jones Village around 11:55 a.m.

Jetta Myricks is now mourning the loss of her brother.

"I really do miss him," Myricks said. "Whoever did that to him, he didn't deserve to get killed like that."

Friends and family at the scene say they are not sure why this happened to Hicks, who is being remembered as a loving brother, son, friend, uncle and father.

"Y'all took him away from his child, and his nieces and nephews," Myricks said. "And I feel like y'all took him away from me, and that's all that I had. That was my backbone."

More than 80 Facebook users mourned the news when it was shared online.

Myricks says Hicks loved to travel, despite spending time at home as he suffered from epilepsy.

But he'll be remembered most for making everyone smile.

"Cortez always been there for me through it all, that's all I had," Myricks said. "I'm gonna stand up and be that strong girl that I need to be for my nephew and be an auntie and straighten up my life and get right for my brother."

The GBI is investigating the case.
