Dublin City Schools teaching kids about giving back during Stuff the Truck

Susie Dasher Elementary School students collected almost 1,000 items for Stuff the Truck!

DUBLIN, Ga. — They say some things take a village, and when it comes to fighting hunger in Dublin, that village looks like a school district.

Susie Dasher Elementary School teacher Sheree Dudley said she's sure there may be families in her own school district that need help putting food on the table.

"For some people, these are kind of trying times. So I wouldn't doubt that we actually have kids that are in need," Dudley said.

That's why she said it's incredible her school collected a trailer full of donations for Stuff the Truck on Wednesday. She dropped off the food donations with students from the school's student council board.

"Little kids want to help regardless. So it's just something that they like to do and bringing in canned goods just made them want to help others even more," Dudley said.

It's a lesson they're proud to teach kids young.

Kennedy Richardson is on the student council and said they counted almost 1,000 donations from the school.

"It's great. I wish we could help more," Kennedy said. "But... that's good still."

She said she's happy her school collected so many cans of food because she's seen homeless folks throughout the county that she worries about going hungry or getting cold.

Dublin High School cheerleaders also joined the fun, coming out to help Stuff the Truck by cheering folks on Wednesday morning.

"They like to teach us at school the law of reciprocity. You know, each one, teaches one. Each one gives back to each other. So when our community pours into us, especially being young kids, it's only right that we can do the same," senior Amiria Thomas said.

By noon, half of a truck was filled with donations from Dublin. CEO of Middle Georgia Community Food Bank Kathy McCollum said last during last year's Stuff the Truck week, they filled six trucks with donations, and she's excited to see if they can beat that number this year.
