Byron Police investigating an arson fire at a church

A Facebook post from the Byron Police Department said it happened around 11 p.m. on Tuesday

BYRON, Ga. — The Byron Police Department is investigating an arson fire at a church.

In a Facebook post, they said it happened around 11 p.m. on Tuesday night at the Byron United Methodist Church located on West Heritage Street.

Police Chief Wesley Cannon said there were two separate fires.

The first one was in the sanctuary and the second one was in the church offices. He says they appear to be set.

In a Facebook post, Pastor Josh Bizzell wrote that the church offices are destroyed and that damage to the sanctuary was minimal.

“Thank you for your prayers and know that we will come through this stronger as a church and a community.” Bizzell wrote.

Cannon says the GBI is also helping with the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Macon Regional CrimeStoppers at 1-877-68CRIME.
