MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — Baldwin County residents will have a new playground soon.
The county received a $50,000 grant from T-Mobile to create a park in the Oconee Heights Neighborhood.
County Manager Carlos Tobar and the county commissioners have been refurbishing neighborhoods on the south side of Baldwin County, including Oconee Heights.
Pamela Pinkston has lived in Baldwin County her whole life. She says she is thrilled to have a new place for the children.
“They will love that because we had one, once up here," she said. "They need this. It’s the safe thing. It's not really safe for these kids out here in the street."
Pinkston says Oconee Heights can be dangerous. She says she's tired of the shootings, and wants to see that it's safe for kids to play.
“I want them to enjoy life like we did when we was coming up," she said. "We had things to play on and it's not like that now. We need security."
County commission chairman Johnny Westmoreland says he's passionate about the children too.
“$50,000 for playground equipment makes you feel good, especially for these kids that are missing so much," he said. "They haven't had the opportunity to enjoy this type of equipment."
He says now kids in Oconee Heights will not have to travel to play.
“So this being in their neighborhood will be excellent and they don't have to worry about getting to the place," he said. "Most of them will be able to walk or bicycle. That is going to be great for these kids."
This is part of an assessment done in Oconee Heights where people said they were concerned about housing, infrastructure and recreation.
