Houston County High School students compete for Stuff the Truck 2024

At Houston County High School, students have been competing for a month to see who can bring in the most food items.

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — Schools across Central Georgia are gearing up to donate in an even bigger way for Stuff the Truck 2024. At Houston County High School, students have been competing for a month to see who can bring in the most food items.

"NHS is currently beating student council,” Hensoee said. “We currently have about 100 cans donated."

Clubs started collecting food items in October and had more than one thousand items donated before November started.

"We're a competitive school at heart,” Bryce Cannon said. “Everything we do, we try to put our best effort, and this isn't any different."

The club's boxes are around the school and each one is keeping track of their points. Principal Jay Jones said he started this contest to get more people involved in the great cause.

"When the Stuff the Truck initiative came across my desk, I felt compelled to pull everybody together and let's have one clear focus of supporting the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank," Jones said.

Senior Mackenna Hensoee said she and her friends enjoy contributing to the competition with a deeper meaning.

"Just knowing that there's probably kids within our county and even within our own school that come to school just to eat and knowing that stuff that we are doing as a club can help people that we might personally know is a really, just a very good feeling," she said.

Jennifer McDaniels said she doesn't mind seeing her classroom get crowded with donation boxes.

“I think just being able to give back in this way and opening up the doors and saying, ‘hey, we're all going to give back’ and if you need, we've got,” she said. “I think that just promoting that piece of it is really big and knowing that we're helping the greater community, and our own personal students is just really rewarding.”

The contest ends November 15th, just in time for the school to deliver their donations to stuff the truck.

“Everybody needs food,” Cannon said. “I think that's like one of the most important things and for us to be able to help people out with that, it makes us feel better and we can just know that we made an impact on people around us.”

Principal Jones invites the public to donate food items to their Stuff the Truck competition. You can choose which club to give your donations to. Bring it to the Houston County High School front office during school hours through November 15th.
