Mural of Civil Rights leader John Lewis defaced in Warner Robins, police looking for suspect

The mural depicted the late John Lewis, a civil rights activist and who represented Georgia in Congress for over 30 years.

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — A Warner Robins mural was defaced on Friday afternoon, according to a release from the Warner Robins Police Department.

The mural depicted Rep. John Lewis, who represented Georgia in Congress from 1987 through his death in 2020.

The release says the police arrived at the scene in 100 block of Commercial Circle near Warner Robins High School to find that a mural painted on the side of a business had been defaced.

Before Lewis' time in Washington, he led marches in the 1960s advocating for the voting rights of Black people, with the most notable being the march in Selma, Alabama. That peaceful march of around 600 peaceful protesters culminated in a violent confrontation with Alabama state troopers now known as "Bloody Sunday."

According to the report, the police investigated and learned a male suspect left the Ace Hardware on Commercial Circle around 1 p.m. on Friday. They say he headed to the mural and spray-painted over it. The release says the suspect had a beard and wore a white bandana, a white shirt and black pants.

The Warner Robins is continuing to investigate this incident. If anyone has relevant information, they are urged to contact the Warner Robins Police Department at 478-302-5380.
