9-year-old girl shot in Fort Valley apartment complex, airlifted to hospital

The girl is expected to survive, despite being airlifted away. This is the most recent in a string of shootings stemming from this Fort Valley apartment complex.

FORT VALLEY, Ga. — A Friday morning shooting at the Lakeview Apartments in Fort Valley left a 9-year-old girl injured. According to the Fort Valley Police Department, officers were patrolling the area when they heard several gunshots near 1105 Edward St. around 1:30 a.m.

According to a police report, officers found a woman waving for help at the apartments. She informed them that her daughter had been shot while lying in bed.

The officers quickly located the young girl, who had suffered a gunshot wound to her right shoulder, inside the apartment.

Emergency responders from Peach County EMS arrived on the scene and initially transported the girl to a local hospital. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was then airlifted to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta for further treatment. She is expected to survive.

At this time, no suspects have been identified, and the investigation is ongoing. Police are currently looking at suspects.

This incident is the latest in a series of shootings at the Lakeview Apartments, a complex that has been troubled by safety issues.

Just a few weeks ago, a shootout occurred at the same location, though no injuries were reported in that incident. A woman, also in bed when the shooting occurred, was nearly hit by gunfire.

Residents of the complex asked to not be interviewed, but said that the security at the apartments has been declining.

Fort Valley police Chief DJ Flores emphasized the importance of community cooperation in solving these crimes. He urges anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and assist in the investigation.
