Macon family remembers grandson killed in downtown gas station shooting

RaQuavian Smith, 23, was shot and killed at the Marathon gas station on Napier Avenue

MACON, Ga. — The Bibb County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal Saturday night shooting at the Marathon gas station on Napier Avenue.

23-year-old RaQuavian Smith was shot while leaving the store. His grandmother, Cathy Smith says he was turning his life around.

"I couldn't believe it," Smith said.

Smith says doctors told her RaQuavian was shot twice in the head. RaQuavian had three young boys and worked at the Goodwill on Zebulon Road. She says she raised him since middle school and he was always fun.

"When interacting with me, we played around," Smith said. "It was fun to be with my grandson. I loved him, I loved him a lot. I'm going to miss him a lot too."

Smith says investigators haven't said much about who shot RaQuavian.

"We don't know what happened," she said. "We haven't seen no video of anything so I can't say what really happened because I don't know."

Gregory Wilcox lives in the West Macon area. She says no one should lose their life so young and hopes churches can help people going down the wrong path.

"It makes me feel sad," Wilcox said. "It makes me feel real sad. We need more leaders in this world that's going to make a difference."

Smith hopes investigators will find the person responsible for shooting her grandson.

"I just hope they find what happened, what really happened, and who did this to him," Smith said.

Smith said RaQuavian was driving around with his cousin at the time of the shooting. She says he's not talking to anyone because of how upsetting the situation is.
