MACON, Ga. — The tropics have been relatively quiet the past few months compared to recent years.
Colorado State University previously forecasted a below-average every hurricane season.
However, as of July 6th, Colorado State has upgraded its forecast, predicting an above-average hurricane season.
Here's the updated graphic:
Colorado State increased the number of tropical storms from 13 to 18. They also increased the number of hurricanes from 6 to 9.
Lastly, they doubled the number of major hurricanes from 2 to 4, making nearly half the forecasted hurricanes a category three or higher.
Overall, Colorado State has forecasted an above-average hurricane season this year.
This increase is due to warm sea surface temperatures.
The Atlantic this year is forecasted to be warmer than when Hurricane Katrina formed in 2005. The tropics will really kick it up a notch by late August.
We have already seen 3 named storms this season: Arlene, Bret, and Cindy. There are definitely more to come.
