First snow of 2021 falls in north Georgia

Snow has been reported in Hiawassee, Cleveland, Jasper, Sassafras Mountain and others.

ATLANTA — The first snow of 2021 made it to Georgia.

On Thursday evening, the snowflakes began falling in parts of north Georgia where there was a winter storm warning in effect. It continued into Friday for some counties. That winter storm warning was later downgraded to just an advisory.

11Alive community StormTrackers reported snow in Hiawassee, Cleveland, Jasper, Sassafras Mountain, Tiger Mountain and others.

Some counties in the advisory were expected to see around 2 to 4 inches of snow between Thursday evening and Friday, mostly at elevations above 1500'. While temperatures stayed too much on the warmer side for that to happen, the snow that did fall created a beautiful scene.

The moisture is expected to move out of the state by the end of Friday, but cold air will follow behind, and temperatures in the 30s in north Georgia could create slick travel conditions for some.

Georgia Department of Transportation crews already worked Thursday to brine the roads in the higher elevations of northeast and northwest Georgia Thursday afternoon. Plow teams were also on standby Thursday night into Friday morning.

Meanwhile in metro Atlanta, the chance for snow was virtually zero. Much of the area only saw a really cold rain.

Below is a short video of light snow falling on the way to Hiawassee.
