National Weather Service confirms EF-1 tornado in Wheeler County that left two dead

The National Weather Service estimated this brief twister had 90 mile per hour winds.

MACON, Ga. — The National Weather Service office in Peachtree City surveyed the damage down in Wheeler County from a tornado warned storm during Hurricane Helene. After the inspection, they have determined it was a low-end EF-1 tornado.

The tornado was very brief and only traveled 0.70 miles and was on the ground for only two minutes from 8:56 to 8:58 PM on Sept. 26. Based on the damage, 90 mile per hour winds were estimated.

The tornado killed two residents of a mobile home that flipped during the time it was on the ground.

The twister touched down around Highway 19, just south of Glenwood in Wheeler County, and proceeded to cross over the intersection of Ponderosa Road and Adams Cemetery Road.

A couple of smaller trees were snapped, but the main damage was the complete destruction of a mobile home that was not fastened down and threw the debris about 75 yards away from where the home was located.

That was the home where the two people were killed.
