MACON, Ga. — Despite increased rainfall to conclude June 2022, 55.94% of Georgia finds itself in moderate drought. Last week, the number stood at 25.92%. Nearly the entire state is in abnormally dry conditions.
Severe drought conditions were observed in and around Savannah and along the Georgia coast. Those conditions extend into the lowcountry of South Carolina.
The numbers are as of Tuesday, June 28, and were released by the U.S. Drought Monitor Thursday morning.
For June, Middle Georgia Regional airport picked up 6.42" of rain, almost 2" more than an average June for Macon.
In Savannah, the official recording site picked up 3.06" of rain, which is less than half of the normal 6.65" of rain that region of coastal Georgia sees in an average June.
According to the U.S. Drought Monitor organization, moderate drought conditions can cause damage to crops and pastures.
The USDM relies on experts analyze the best available drought data and work with local observers to interpret the information. It also incorporates ground truthing and information about how drought is affecting people.
More than 450 observers across the country, including state climatologists, National Weather Service staff, Extension agents, and hydrologists, contribute to the information gathering.
