MACON, Ga. — September 1st marks the first official day of meteorological fall. Here are a few fun facts you need to know!
Fun fact #1: Fall used to be called, "Harvest"
In the 1300s, "Fall was previously called, "Harvest" It wasn't until the 1500s that people started calling the third season of the year, "Fall of the Leaf," and eventually, it was just "fall."
Fun fact #2: Apple Cider
Did you know that apple cider is a fall drink because apples are harvested during fall?
More importantly, it takes 36 apples to make one gallon of apple cider.
Fun fact #3: Seasons
The earth's distance from the sun has nothing to do with fall.
Seasons exist because the earth is tilted 23.5 degrees. When the earth rotates at this angle during a certain time of the year, the U.S. ends up seeing more night than daylight. Without the tilt, there would not be any seasons.
Fun fact #4: Statistics
Studies conducted by the University of Chicago say children born in the fall are more likely to live longer than those who aren't.
According to studies conducted by the New England Journal of Medicine, studies have also shown that heart attack rates drop during fall.

Astronomical fall starts September 22nd. Although we can expect cooler temperature farther into October. Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Halloween or just a couple days we look forward too this season. Meteorological winter starts December 1st and lasts until the end of February.
