MACON, Ga. — The National Hurricane Center designated an area of disturbed weather in the central Atlantic Ocean as Tropical Depression Seven late Wednesday morning.
As of 11 a.m., the storm had winds of 35 mph, a pressure of 1009 millibars, and was moving west at 14 mph. The center was located approximately 800 miles west of the Leeward Islands.
Seven is forecasted to intensify into tropical storm status and gain the name Fiona within the next 24 hours as it moved westward, crossing over the Lesser Antilles and into the northeast Caribbean late Friday.
The official forecast from the National Hurricane Center keeps it as a weak tropical storm during this process.
By Monday morning, Seven should weaken back to tropical depression status as it interacts with the mountainous terrain of Hispaniola.
The National Hurricane Center does not issue forecasts beyond five days, however long-range weather models show the energy from this system in the Bahamas early next week.
