SANDERSVILLE, Ga. — As Central Georgia communities continue to sort through debris in the wake of Helene, a Sandersville couple says they're grateful to be OK.
Robert Fisher and his fiancé Rose woke up to fallen trees and no power in Sandersville Friday. Fisher says he walked outside and saw his truck completely buried by trees and limbs.
He was shocked. His fiancé was heartbroken; but above all, the couple was glad to be OK.
"Again, we're blessed that, we were the only real damage. We were out of power for a few days and my truck's gone, but that's replaceable," he said.
Fisher says these kind of situations help people to remember what is important.
"Not only thankful for the things I have, but it also shows you what's really important family and friends and dogs are what's really important. Everything else is replaceable," he said.
Fisher says he went without power for two full days. He says the power was eventually restored. He says he feels sorry for he people that do not have it around him.
"We're getting our power back today, which is amazing," he said. "My goal is to bring rural Georgia into the picture because I know Augusta got hit bad. I have friends in Augusta I have talked to friends in Dublin. We are a town of 12,000 people but we are suffering just as bad as they are."
The storm brought Marietta Power to help cities like Sandersville with the damage. Alex Gosset was there to help with powerlines.
"It's a storm relief. They'll call us to come down if they've got something. It's kind of, if we got something, they come help us and they got something we can help them." Gosset said.
Gosset says they are working to do what they can to help; but working with powerlines can take time.
"We're getting it back on as quick as we can. I mean, we want the power back on as bad as they do," Gosset said.
