MACON, Ga. — Starting tonight, Central Georgia will have an opportunity to see one of the strongest meteor showers of the year!
While the Perseid Meteor Shower has been ongoing since late July, it will peak in Central Georgia after midnight.
During the peak, streaks of bright lights will be visible across the sky, along with potential fireballs caused by the remnants of comets after entering the atmosphere.
Around 50 to 100 meteors could be seen in an hour. The best times to view the shower will be from 1 to 6 a.m.
Thankfully, clouds should not be an obstacle to your view as mostly clear skies are expected. Models indicate that cloud cover will increase for northern counties around sunrise.
Even with the favorable weather, it is best to find a dark spot away from city lights.
Any light pollution could drastically hinder your view. Do not expect to be able to see the shower immediately, as our eyes will need time to adjust to the dark.
After 15 to 30 minutes, you should be able to see the meteors clearly. It is also best to avoid bright screens from phones as that will limit your eyes from adjusting to the night sky.
The next major meteor shower will be the Orionids. This meteor shower will not peak until October. The Orionids are known to be bright, but they will not be as profound as the Perseid Meteor Shower.
A full moon could light up the Central Georgia sky next Monday.
