MACON, Ga. — The 2023 Annular Solar Eclipse is Saturday, October 14th. In Central Georgia, the eclipse will begin around 11:45 am. The peak will be at 1:14 pm, and the eclipse will be over at 2:48 pm.
Solar eclipses are annular when the moon is farthest away from Earth. From Earth, the moon looks smaller. The moon is too small to cover the entire sun, even if they are directly in front of one another. A 'ring of fire' will surround the moon. Despite the eclipse being annular, it is still dangerous to look directly into the sun or an eclipse of any magnitude.
Here's what you need:
1. A recycled box
2. A recycled sheet of paper
3. A pair of scissors.
4. A pin
5. Tape
6. Sheet of foil
First, cut out a sheet of paper and tape it onto one of the inner sides of the box. Then, carefully cut two square holes in both corners opposite of the paper. Cut a small sheet of foil and tape it over one of the holes. Be careful not to let the tape cover the hole.
Lastly, take the pin and carefully puncture the foil, leaving a tiny hole for sunlight to come in.
Now, you can look into the empty hole while the foil faces the sun and watch the eclipse unfold. You will be looking away from the sun but inside the box.
Remember, never look directly at the sun before, during, or after the eclipse. It can be very dangerous.
