Two bridges are being replaced on Tucker Road. They are moving into the next phase of the project

It should take about two-and-a-half years to complete the project, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

MACON, Ga. — If you commute on or near Tucker Road, you may want to prepare for some more congestion and construction.

Two bridges will be replaced along the street: one over Interstate 475 and one over Rocky Creek Road.

It should take about two and a half years to complete the project, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Right now, Gina Snider from GDOT said they're in the "clearing and grubbing phase," which means you may see some downed trees on the side of the road.

"Clearing and grubbing phase does not include any lane closures or traffic control," Snider added in a statement.

Like James Osterbuhr, you may have driven through the intersection of Peake and Tucker roads, where the bridge crosses over the interstate.

He works at the Publix Plaza at the corner of Thomaston and Tucker roads.

Site prep got underway this week on Monday, around the time Osterbuhr had to run his weekly errands.

But Osterbuhr said it was closed when he got to the light right before the bridge over I-475.

"When I went to the bank, [the road] was completely shut down," Osterbuhr said. Once you got to Peake Road, you couldn't go past it; you had to go on Peake. There were trucks blocking everything."

He hopes there won't be any more unexpected traffic as the project progresses.

"If there's a way they can do it without completely shutting down the traffic past that point, that'd be the best way to handle it because that way there's no flowthrough, there's no congestion," Osterbuhr said.

The project will also replace the bridge at Rocky Creek. According to GDOT, it will have a detour from Tucker Road.

But you can wait. According to Snider, that will not happen until the end of April or later.

Snider said they expect to complete the project by late summer of 2026.
