Austin Cox is the first Mercer Bear player this year selected in the MLB draft. He was selected in the 5th round with the 152nd overall pick by the Kansas City Royals.
Cox, played high school at FPD, and became the Friday night starter for the Mercer Bears this past year. He compiled a 7-4 record and racked up 124 strikeouts for the 2018 season. Cox becomes the 7th Bear in program history to be selected in the first 10 rounds of the draft.
"I am just really excited for him, can't say enough good things, he comes into the program a non drafted guy. You know Brent has done a great job with him and he has worked his tail off," Mercer baseball coach Craig Gibson said. "You know good things happen to guys that work hard and he has certainly done that."
This is the third straight year, and fourth time in the last five years Mercer has had at least one player drafted.
