Peach County softball is performing better than ever

The 2024 Peach County softball team is performing better than any other team in school history. 13WMAZ spoke with the Trojans on what their season is looking like.

PEACH COUNTY, Ga. — The Peach County Trojans finished last season with a losing record.

This season, they're undefeated in region play. The program has turned around in a remarkable way.

The success of this season could have to do with a new guy in charge. Joey Hiller took over as head coach during the offseason. He coached at Tattnall for 20 years before taking his talents to Peach County baseball.

Senior catcher and co-captain Kaylyn Hornaday said not everyone thought they could come into this year and accomplish as much as they have.

"It means a lot. It's it's always been a goal around here to get there, and a lot of people didn't have any faith, or didn't believe in us," catcher and co-captain Kaylyn Hornaday said. "And now that we're that we're making it, people are recognizing it."

The Trojans are 18-2 on the season and 7-0 in region play. There have just nine regular season games left on the schedule.

"We haven't even scratched the surface of what's coming," Hiller said. "And so it's great to know that they this group's focused on the fundamentals and establishing the right culture."

"Coach Hiller always says, 'Practice with a championship mindset,'" co-captain and pitcher Gracie Martin said. "He really wants a first level class program, and I think we work really hard to get there."

The secret to their success? They said it's all about attitude.

"Staying up, staying positive," Hornaday said. "Not everybody's gonna have a perfect game, not everybody's gonna have a perfect practice, but it's really attitude. And we lift each other up around here."

Kaylyn Hornaday and Gracie Martin are two of the team's heaviest hitters. Hornaday is a 3-hole hitter, currently batting a .420 with 13 doubles and 24 RBI. Martin is the leadoff hitter, batting .442 on the season with 21 runs scored.

The Trojans face Spalding Monday before their regional matchup with Cairo Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
