MACON, Ga. — The big game is almost here.
On Tuesday, Northeast will travel to Atlanta to meet Toombs County in their first-ever state championship appearance.
We caught up with the team at their final practice to see how they're feeling.
"We're feeling great, honestly," said senior running back Nick Woodford.
"You'll have butterflies and have nerves and goosebumps, but if you're a football player or any athlete, you gone have dem," said head coach Jeremy Wiggins.
It's less than 24 hours before the Northeast Raiders kickoff in Mercedes Benz Stadium - a venue that many players will visit for the first time.
"I have [been] years ago, but I never stepped on the field," said Woodford.
"First time experience," said junior quarterback Reginald Glover.
The program is making their first ever appearance in the GHSA state championship. Northeast legend Wiggins is proud to still be making history at his school.
"I give a lot of thanks to the man up top for giving me an opportunity to just come back and impact the community in a positive way, and if sports gone be the answer to impact this community then so be it," Wiggins said.
Wiggins said they're focusing on the little details before they pack the busses to Atlanta. He said the goal is to try to treat the championship as just another game.
"With the media and with the interviews and stuff like that, it's not a normal game, but you try to normalize as much you can and just stay focused on what you've been doing all year," Wiggins said.
All year, the Raiders offense has been powered by an explosive dynamic duo. Glover, also known as 'Bam', and Woodford have been making plays for the east side all year long.
Glover said playing his last few snaps with Woodford is going to be bittersweet.
"Might shed a few tears. Imma miss him - especially the backfield duo. We talk a lot in the backfield," Glover said. "Before the play, I'll tell him if I want to run it, he'll tell me if he wants to run it. We do a lot of stuff in the backfield - we play a lot."
Wiggins said the support for their team continues to grow the closer they get to kickoff.
"I'm excited for the players. I'm excited for the school, I'm excited for the community but at the end of the day you know we're going to go out there and play a football game and we'll try to put our best foot forward," Wiggins said.
