Mercer football surprises standout offensive lineman with scholarship

Mic Wasson has played in 23 games over two seasons as a Mercer Bear. This season, he'll be playing as a scholarship athlete.

MACON, Ga. — Selfless, Intelligent and hardworking: that’s how coaches describe Mic Wasson

The Mercer football program saw that it was time to celebrate his character in a big way.

“After practice, Coach Jacobs told us we had a hype video. So, when I turned around, saws my parents, I was like, 'Oh, so I guess the parents are doing the hype video for all of us,'” Wasson said.

But then he noticed the video only featured his parents.

“They announced that I earned a full scholarship, and it was just a surreal feeling, you know, and for being surrounded by my teammates,” Wasson said. “It was awesome. I mean, I train every day with these guys. We love each other … we are brothers, and it was just great getting to celebrate it with them.”

Wasson was surprised during practice with a video sharing the news of his scholarship. Coaches said the excitement shown on the field embodies his importance to the team. It’s a moment him and his family have dreamed about for years.

“Whenever I came in as a walk on, I told my dad that I was going to earn a scholarship before I graduated and getting to finally earn that goal. And it was just awesome,” Wasson said.

The Bears said it was earned, not given. Defensive Coordinator Jahmal Brown said it was something the coaching staff had been planning for a while.

“Everybody loves him. He does a great job just kind of connecting with everybody on the team. Doesn't matter what position group, what side of the bar. You know, he's a great leader,” Brown sain.

“He’s always been a fierce competitor. He has always been 110% in everything he does independent, but yet, fiercely loyal,” His mom, Amber Wasson said.

Mic isn’t finished yet, though. This season he has his sights set on winning SOCON with his team.
